U.S. President Joe Biden's administration is likely to tighten crude oil sanctions against OPEC member Iran in response to the Islamic Republic's backing of Palestinian militant group Hamas, according to Helima Croft, head of global commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets. Her comments come ahead of a widely expected ground offensive by Israel into Gaza, a move that Croft believes could set the tone for the West's response to Iran. It has been more than two weeks since Israel announced a "complete siege" on the Gaza Strip, cutting off food, water, fuel and electricity supplies after a devastating Hamas attack. "It certainly looks like the United States is trying to delay an Israeli ground operation because they want to get out the hostages, they want to get out the hundreds of Americans that are trapped in Gaza, but the question is, is this going to be postponed indefinitely, but I think people are bracing for some type of escalation in Gaza," Croft told CNBC's Dan Murphy in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. She described the oil price reaction to the Israel-Hamas war as "sanguine" so far, but nevertheless said "a lot's going to hinge on what does a potential ground operation look like" and that a widening of the conflict into the broader Middle Eastern region could affect the crude supplies of Iran.

Global oil demand growth will trickle nearly to a halt in the coming years and peak this decade, according to the International Energy Agency, with Chinese consumption set to slow down after an initial pent-up recovery. "The shift to a clean energy economy is picking up pace, with a peak in global oil demand in sight before the end of this decade as electric vehicles, energy efficiency and other technologies advance," IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said in a statement. Annual demand growth, however, will thin down from 2.4 million barrels per day this year to 400,000 barrels per day in 2028. Global supply capacity will rise by 5.9 million barrels per day to 111 million barrels per day by 2028 in IEA estimates, with growth lulling amid a U.S. slowdown. This will lead to a spare capacity cushion of 4.1 million barrels per day, focused in OPEC heavyweights Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Netanyahu agreed with one of his hard-right coalition partners, Itamar Ben-Gvir, that the judiciary overhaul bill would be given an extension to the next session to pass the reform through negotiations, NBC reported. As part of the agreement, a National Guard will be set up under Ben-Gvir's Ministry of National Security. The latest development indicates Netanyahu has not yet given up on the contentious reform bill, despite huge protests and widespread strikes. The prime minister — who is the longest-serving in Israel's history — was expected to announce a pause to the legislation on Monday, but the delivery of his statement was postponed three times, according to the Jerusalem Post.
